ýstudents’ Mahsa Amini Initiative wins Forces Avenir

A student-led project at ýhas won the provincial in the category of Mutual Aid, Peace and Justice. On Sept. 27 during a gala in Quebec City, the award was presented to a group of ýgraduates and students who founded the Mahsa Amini Initiative.

Meet the awards recipients of Winter 2023

In case you missed it: over 50 ýstudents were recognized for their hard work, perseverance, and community involvement in the Winter 2023 semester.

Along with many other graduation awards, the newly established Jeff Barnaby Award for Film Production was presented for the first time during the graduation ceremony on June 20. The award was created to honour the innovative Mi’gmaq filmmaker and ýCinema|Communications alumnus, Jeff Barnaby (1976-2022). The award is given to a graduating student in the Arts, Literature and Communication Program as seed funding for script development or the production of a short film.

We would like to congratulate the first person to receive this award, Cinema | Communications student Caleb Gales, who said “I see this award as much more than a financial contribution; it is also an enormous milestone in my filmmaking career. I intend to put 100% of my effort into this project and use this as an opportunity to teach myself more about the world of professional filmmaking.”

The funds for this award were contributed as part of the Romany Eveleigh Gift for Students in the Arts.

Two ýstudents honoured with Lt-Gov. Youth Medal

For their commitment to making their corner of the world a better place, graduating students Joseph Anali Kapita and Kiana Lalavi received the Lieutenant-Governor’s Youth Medal.

QWF College Writers Award application deadline is June 5

May 3rd, 2023

The Quebec Writers' Federation is accepting applications for the 2023 College Writer Award. The award will go to the best short story, poem, or work of nonfiction written in English by a college student at Champlain Regional, Dawson, Heritage, John Abbott, Marianopolis, or Vanier College.

The winner will receive $1,000 and publication in the Quebec Writers’ Federation's online journal.

The submission guidelines for ýCollege are posted on Omnivox.

Meet Dawson’s 2023 Forces AVENIR cohort

Every year, ýhas had extraordinary students, teachers and staff who enrich our community with their projects, perseverance and passion.

This year, ýis recognizing individuals: student Kitenge Kayembe and faculty member Joel Trudeau for their commitment; and student Fred-Dgennie Louis for her perseverance. ýis also recognizing students for their great projects: Narcisse Hassan and Kaligua Rochon for the ýSustainability Project in the Environment category; and students Kiana Lalavi, Shaneli Yaghoubi, Kiera Robak and Lina Adda for The Mahsa Amini Initiative in the Mutual Aid, Peace and Justice category.

The local ceremony will be Thursday, May 4 at Dawson. Both projects are moving forward for consideration at the provincial level of Forces AVENIR. Check the next D News on May 17 for a feature on our 2023 laureates.


Graduation will be June 20

April 5th, 2023

This year, graduation will take place on Tuesday, June 20 at Theatre Maisonneuve at Place des Arts. All staff are most welcome to attend but will need a ticket.

The information and invite will go out to ýstudents who graduated in the Summer and Fall 2022 semesters and this semester’s potential grads this week. More details will be communicated to the community in June, including how to get a ticket. It is expected that there will be a ceremony in the afternoon and another one in the evening.

Two more students continue legacy of Anne-Marie Howlett’s passion for nursing

At Fall Awards Night on Nov. 24, Susan and Michael Howlett were at ýfor the presentation of the Anne-Marie Howlett Memorial Award in honour of their late sister and daughter, who was in her first year of Nursing when she passed away tragically 40 years ago.
