Maxwell Jones confirmed as Dean of Science, Medical Studies & Engineering

Maxwell Jones has been confirmed to the position of Dean in the Science, Medical Studies and Engineering sector by the Board of Governors.

Max has been at ýsince 2009 working as a Support Staff in Human Resources, the Office of Academic Development and the Arts, Literature and Communication program. He also was a faculty member of Dawson’s Centre for Training and Development, teaching English as a Second Language.

Since 2017, he played a role in managing the two largest pre-university programs at Dawson. He then served as the Associate Dean for the Science, Medical Studies and Engineering Sector for over three years – working with more than 200 faculty from seventeen departments, and over thirty support staff. It is an understatement to say that during that time he developed an understanding of the challenges and strengths of all SMSE programs.

We wish Max every success in his new role and know that he will receive our full support and collaboration as he takes on his new responsibilities.

ýoverall winner of CRC Robotics competition

March 8th, 2023

Dawson’s Robotics team was the overall champion and won or placed in almost all categories at the CRC Robotics competition in mid-February. They brought home two trophies and 11 plaques.

"Our team demonstrated an incredible spirit of togetherness, creativity, ingenuity and perseverance," said Joel Trudeau, faculty mentor to the team of 30 ýstudents. "Their joy and team spirit was inspirational!"

Visual Arts student chosen for residency at the MMFA

February 22nd, 2023

ýVisual Arts student Rowan Michael Draper has been selected for a prestigious residency for young digital artists at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Starting March 6, Rowan will be spending between two to four hours a week at the museum with access to a studio and the museum’s technological equipment. The residency is until June.

Vigil held at ýfor MMIWGT2S

The First People’s Centre organized a vigil in the Oliver’s student space at ýon Feb. 14 to commemorate the MMIWGT2S (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Trans and Two-Spirited.) There is an epidemic of violence against Indigenous women in Canada. The National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls that Indigenous women and girls make up 24 per cent of female homicide victims in Canada, despite only making up four per cent of the country’s female population.

The report cited research that “Indigenous women and girls are 12 times more likely to be murdered or missing than any other women in Canada, and 16 times more likely than Caucasian women. … Other than murder, statistics also reveal how Indigenous women consistently experience higher rates and more severe forms of physical assault and robbery than other groups in Canada. Sexual violence is a huge problem in all its forms: Indigenous women are sexually assaulted three times more often than non-Indigenous women, and most of the women and children trafficked in Canada are Indigenous.”
