Earth Weeks are April 19-30

This year, we have added an s to Earth Weeks and scheduled two weeks of events.

Here are some highlights:

Sustainability 爱豆传媒 Open House Wednesday, April 21 at 10 a.m.

Come meet representatives from colleges and universities that offer Sustainability degrees and/or certificates, including Dawson鈥檚 Environmental & Sustainability Certificate.

Beehive Opening Wednesday, April 21 at听12 p.m.

Take a peek inside Dawson鈥檚 4H rooftop hive 鈥� and听 experience honey bees remotely!

Keynote Speaker Dr. Ingrid Waldron Thursday, April 22 at 1 p.m.

Author of There鈥檚 Something in the Water: Environmental Racism in Indigenous and Black Communities, which was turned into a 2020 Netflix documentary, Dr. Waldron recently co-founded the Anti-Environmental Racism Coalition. Organizations in the environmental and climate change sector are collaborating on projects and sharing expertise and resources to address environmental racism in Indigenous, Black and other racialized communities across Canada.

Nisha Toomey, University of Toronto, OISE will discuss how we can and should challenge the western canon and thought in educational institutions as a meaningful way to engage with decolonization. March 30 at 2:30 p.m.: Immigrant Settler Responsibilities to Indigenous Peoples in the time of reconciliation, with Deanna del Vecchio (University of Toronto),听Nisha Toomey, (University of Toronto, OISE) and Jade Ho (Simon Fraser University) Open to Students, Faculty & Staff. .

March 31 at 1 p.m.: Poetry & the Art of Black Resistance, with , , and moderated by 听Beginning with a recitation of their works Shanice, Lindsay and Faith will showcase their poetic talents. Following this, Deana Smith will moderate a discussion on the need for inclusion of Black authors and artists as a part of the western artistic & literary canon and how the art is a means of resilience & resistance. 听 Open to all.

April 6 at 5:30 pm: Leanne听 Betasamosake Simpson, scholar, author, activist & artist extraordinaire join us as the final speaker in the Indigenous Climate Justice speaker series听 (JAC, Kativik School Board and 爱豆传媒Peace Centre).听听This series seeks to launch an ongoing discussion around climate injustice. Focusing on Indigenous climate action and pursuits of justice leads us to re-imagine how we conceive of, envision, and tackle the climate crisis. After “Rebellion” students discuss climate change at Feb. 18 panel

February 9th, 2021

Five inspiring 爱豆传媒students and alumni will discuss their views and actions on the Climate Crisis at the Environmental Seminar at 爱豆传媒(virtually) on Feb. 18 at 10 a.m.

The 2019 climate march was featured in an episode of David Suzuki's The Nature of Things entitled "Rebellion". The听mobilization of the College was spearheaded by the Green Earth Club. Students will discuss their involvement in the march as youth activists and present their current projects.

Presentations will be followed by a Q & A. This panel is being moderated by Brian Mader and introduced by Anna-Liisa Aunio. Please watch the episode Rebellion, which is available free on CBC Gem here:

Peace Centre update

November 19th, 2020

Diana Rice, Coordinator of the 爱豆传媒College Peace Centre, is back on duty after 11 months of maternity leave.

鈥淚 am excited to get back to work, dream big and continue to collaborate across the College with faculty, staff, professionals and management,鈥� Diana said. 鈥淚 will begin to plan online Peace Centre activities for the Winter Semester. As always, I welcome the whole community to contact me with your ideas or requests for support.鈥�

Dean of Academic Development Catherine LeBel has also assigned Diana a supporting role as a pedagogical counsellor to faculty involved in certificates.

鈥淲e are happy to have Diana back and grateful for the service of Ildik贸 Glaser-Hille,鈥� said Catherine. 鈥淚ldik贸 鈥� did a great job as the interim programming coordinator of Dawson鈥檚 Peace Centre. She followed through on Diana鈥檚 plans and also made her own unique contribution to the mandate of the Peace Centre. It was a smooth and fruitful collaboration.鈥�

The Peace Centre has had a busy last few months, and the semester is barely at its halfway point. On Sept. 14, the Peace Centre launched its annual Peace Week, Continuing the Conversation: Reimagining, Rebuilding, Reconnecting. Like everything else this school year, we had to adapt to the changing environments and host Peace Week 2020…

Resistance and Resilience opens Oct. 8

October 7th, 2020

Following the success of听Sk茅nn:en: Peace and Decolonization听(2017) and听Queer and Peace听(2018), Diana Rice (Programming Coordinator, Peace Centre) prophetically conceived of a project that would provide a space for those voices traditionally unheard and often ignored: Legacy and racialized immigrant communities. Once again collaborating with Rhonda Meier of the Warren G. Flowers Art Gallery, the work began in 2018 to create a platform for artists to display their experiences of racism and systemic oppression.

Meditation Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays

September 8th, 2020

As part of Dawson's commitment to well-being for all, everyone is welcome to听join faculty members Johanne Rabbat, Madeleine C么t茅 and Daniel Goldsmith for meditation sessions every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 2-2:30 p.m. No experience is necessary; instruction will be provided. Sessions begin Tuesday, Sept. 8 and will continue until the end of classes.
