Miriam on Campus can help you until June 22

The last day of the Miriam on Campus Program will be Thursday, June 22. The program will resume on Wednesday, Sept. 6.

The program’s purpose is to promote the development of work, social and interpersonal skills in an integrated work environment for people with special needs. They are currently at ýduring the work week from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Their office is located in the 5B. 16 area.

The Miriam members can help you with all kinds of tasks: small amounts of paper shredding, putting up and taking down posters, flattening boxes, and/or assembling the boxes, they help in the kitchen cafeteria (wrapping food for example), laundry, reception at PARC, helping out with a variety of gardening tasks, bringing items to shipping, mailing, packaging, cutting old folders, collecting recycling, assembling packages and much more.

Ken Fogel presents new book to Library

May 31st, 2023

Ken Fogel (retired faculty, Computer Science) returned to ýon May 25 to present a copy of his new book, Transitioning to Java. The book will help non-Java developers transition from whatever language they are using now to learning Java.

Claire Elliott of the Library team was on hand to receive the book. She said it will be proudly displayed in the Books by Faculty bookshelf (visible in the photo)


Outstanding ýindividuals honoured with Forces Avenir awards

Three members of the ýcommunity were honoured with Forces Avenir awards on May 4: students Kitenge Kayembe and Fred-Dgennie Louis were recognized, respectively, for commitment and perseverance. Physics faculty member Joel Trudeau was honoured for his commitment to students.

A student community built on sustainability is definitely a Forces Avenir

The student-run ýSustainability Community is committed to supporting ýCollege’s award-winning, globally recognized commitment to sustainability.

Led by Environmental Science students Narcisse Hassan and Kaligua Rochon, the students have worked on a variety of projects that support Dawson’s goal of promoting sustainability through reconnecting people, communities, and Nature.

On May 4, Narcisse and Kaligua received a Forces Avenir award in the Environment category for their ýSustainability Community project.

Mahsa Amini’s legacy is alive at Dawson

In September 2022, Mahsa Amini was arrested in Iran for not wearing a hijab correctly. Eyewitnesses say she was severely beaten. Hours later, she died at the age of 22. Mahsa had just been admitted to university and intended to pursue law. Her death sparked protests in Iran and around the world.

At Dawson, the Mahsa Amini Initiative was created by students Kiana Lalavi, Shaneli Yaghoubi, Kiera Robak and Lina Adda. Their work was recognized on May 4 with the Forces Avenir Award in the category of Mutual Aid, Peace and Justice. Their project has also advanced for consideration at the provincial level.

Professional Photography students staff grad portrait pop-up studio

The ýProfessional Photography students partnered again this year with Campus Life and Leadership (CLL) and members of the ýWeb Group to offer graduation portraits to over 600 of 2023 ýgrads. The collaboration is an excellent example of communities working together to achieve mutually beneficial goals.

Meet Dawson’s 2023 Forces AVENIR cohort

Every year, ýhas had extraordinary students, teachers and staff who enrich our community with their projects, perseverance and passion.

This year, ýis recognizing individuals: student Kitenge Kayembe and faculty member Joel Trudeau for their commitment; and student Fred-Dgennie Louis for her perseverance. ýis also recognizing students for their great projects: Narcisse Hassan and Kaligua Rochon for the ýSustainability Project in the Environment category; and students Kiana Lalavi, Shaneli Yaghoubi, Kiera Robak and Lina Adda for The Mahsa Amini Initiative in the Mutual Aid, Peace and Justice category.

The local ceremony will be Thursday, May 4 at Dawson. Both projects are moving forward for consideration at the provincial level of Forces AVENIR. Check the next D News on May 17 for a feature on our 2023 laureates.


Students learn leadership skills and make lasting friendships at Model UN

About 60 students were able to participate in the ýCollege Model United Nations (DCMUN) para-academic activity this year thanks in part to funding from the Student Academic Enrichment Fund of the ýFoundation.

Model UN has a long history at ýCollege, with the activity running on and off since the late 1990s. The current iteration of DCMUN was established in the 2010-2011 academic year and has been running ever since.

Rocking out at ýVIB event March 29

A lively event stopped by ýon March 29 to move and inspire students and staff. The VIB event is touring campuses across Quebec to promote well-being and health. The event featured a Pound also known as “rocking out” workout, pictured; photo courtesy of RSEQ.

One of College Nurse Julie Gosselin’s student health ambassadors reported: “The participants really enjoyed the event and they liked their free merch. People seemed to really enjoy the Pound session as well since most of them had never done it before

“I think the event was really cool! It was a great way to promote physical activity during a time period when students are stressed and tend to forget the little things we should do to stay healthy.”


VIB Tour stops at ýMarch 29

March 22nd, 2023

A fun and free event promoting well-being for all and physical fitness is coming to ýWednesday, March 29 from 11:45 a.m. to 1:50 p.m. in 3C.1.

Students are invited to for . The program includes Pound (“rocking out”) fitness sessions, glow-in-the-dark yoga, free snacks and fun. If there is space, staff are also welcome to attend.

“The VIB tour only makes a few campus stops every year so I think ýstudents are lucky to have this opportunity,” said Julie Gosselin of Student Health Services, Dawson’s VIB coordinator. The event is sponsored by the RSEQ, Sports Experts and the Quebec Government.
