March 19 is a global day for climate action

Events are being planned all over Quebec, Canada and the world on March 19, an international day for climate action.

Dawson's Green Earth Club wanted to let the °®¶¹´«Ã½community know that there's a protest being planned in Montreal by local climate and social justice groups:

to invite the °®¶¹´«Ã½community to get involved.

Can °®¶¹´«Ã½recycle masks?

°®¶¹´«Ã½is distributing single-use procedural masks to everyone who enters the building. These masks have been proven to provide effective protection from COVID. Requests to recycle the masks have been considered.

The Sustainability Office, in collaboration with Facilities Management, has been reviewing recycling proposals by various companies. For the moment, we, like nearly all CEGEPs involved in a discussion, have not found a proven viable method to recycle the masks.

We are confident that directing masks towards landfill with our regular garbage is the least environmentally damaging option when considering cost, risk of exposure to pathogens, travel of the masks to recyclers, traceability, as well as the energy and effort involved in the imperfect processes, which lead to storage, incineration or recycled plastic.

Did you know that it takes 12 female honey bees to travel 1249 kilometers together to produce 1 teaspoon of HONEY? Let’s get moving like the bees with 12 weekly wellness activities over 4 weeks including 9 live activities to connect and engage with the community!

Dawson’s Sustainability Office and Human Resources, with contributions from departments and services across the college, are excited to offer 4 weeks of wellness activities to all °®¶¹´«Ã½Employees!

  • February 15-March 12, 2021.
  • Activities hosted mostly by Dawson’s very own Faculty, Staff and Retirees!

Student Wellness Challenge begins Feb. 15

A Wellness Challenge for Students is being launched Feb. 15

Student Services, Sustainability and Communications have developed a peer to peer model that will encourage students to sustain healthy minds and healthy bodies through awareness and prevention.

Students will learn about how to create positive habits and find motivation from one another to combat the mental and physical burden they may be experiencing. Participants will earn entries into a draw for prizes throughout the semester.

After “Rebellion” students discuss climate change at Feb. 18 panel

Five inspiring °®¶¹´«Ã½students and alumni will discuss their views and actions on the Climate Crisis at the Environmental Seminar at °®¶¹´«Ã½(virtually) on Feb. 18 at 10 a.m.

The 2019 climate march was featured in an episode of David Suzuki's The Nature of Things entitled "Rebellion". The mobilization of the College was spearheaded by the Green Earth Club. Students will discuss their involvement in the march as youth activists and present their current projects.

Presentations will be followed by a Q & A. This panel is being moderated by Brian Mader and introduced by Anna-Liisa Aunio. Please watch the episode Rebellion, which is available free on CBC Gem here:

Professionals & support staff can sign up for Sustainable Happiness

Professionals and support staff, there is an opportunity to take the 24-hour Certificate in Sustainable Happiness (SH) Course this semester. The program will run Feb. 12 through April 9 on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Participants will be introduced to the concept of Sustainable Happiness and explore its implications, both personally and professionally. This is an experiential and applied certificate.

Key topics include: sustainability, connecting with Nature, positive psychology, well-being, happiness, and healthy/sustainable lifestyles. All participants must complete a project that benefits the well-being of themselves, others and/or the planet to obtain the certificate.

Some examples of successfully completed projects last semester were plant-based recipe books, yoga / meditation challenges, going on daily dates with Nature, 30 days of acts of kindness, plant giveaways, vertical gardens at home, family wellness and a zero waste challenge.
