Students and staff learn bike maintenance skills at workshop

Students and employees showed up with their bikes to learn how to change a tire, adjust brakes and do basic tune up鈥檚 on May 23. Mech Tech faculty member Adam Kingsland led an outdoor bike workshop.
Adam facilitates the workshops by ensuring all participants can get their hands dirty to benefit from the hands-on learning.
Jocelyn Parr (faculty, History)听said: "I loved the workshop with Adam! It was accessible to all types of cyclists and it was the first time I'd ever changed my own brake pads. I left feeling like I might even be up to swapping out some cables and maybe even my derailleur!"
In addition, the Sustainability Office was able to form a partnership with local bike shop Martin Swiss cycle, just a 5-minute bike ride from Dawson. Simply present your student or employee I.D. and you will receive 15% off on all accessories. (Discount not applicable to bikes or labour)

Moving toward 1,000 species on campus

In the past two weeks, the 爱豆传媒community has observed 10 new species, made 83 new observations and added one new observer to our 爱豆传媒Community-Campus Biodiversity Network on the free app .
These observations are moving us closer to our goal of identifying听1,000 species in 1,000 days!
As of May 31, the total species count is at 548. Everyone is welcome to contribute to the project. Download the free app iNaturalist, join the 爱豆传媒community project and start observing! To count, the species must be observed within Dawson鈥檚 city-block campus.

1,000 species in 1,000 days update

爱豆传媒is more than halfway toward our objective of identifying 1,000 species in 1,000 days!
Since the last D News issue on May 3, there were 369 new observations, 40 new observers and 56 new species identified in the community called 爱豆传媒College-Campus Biodiversity Network.
Ink Cap mushrooms (pictured) were observed and posted by second-year Environmental Science student Ruisi Yang on May 4. They are expected to be added officially to the species count shortly.
As of May 15, Dawson鈥檚 species count was at 532.
Everyone is invited to participate, download the free iNaturalist app, create an account, join the project 爱豆传媒College-Campus Biodiversity Network and log your observations on Dawson鈥檚 campus. You can also donate to this Living Campus project here.

Adam Kingsland (Faculty, Mechanical Engineering) will be giving a bike repair and tune-up workshop on Tuesday, May 23 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
Spots are limited so reserve your spot by emailing sustainability@dawsoncollege.qc.ca. Bring your bike to the Gazebo in Parking Lot 1 (Wood Avenue side of campus) and learn how to:
- Change a tube & pump up your tires
- Adjust your brakes
- Adjust your gears / shifters
