Life on Mars statistically probable according to Richard Soare鈥檚 research

Is there life on Mars? That question is propelling the mission of the Perseverance rover, which landed on the Red Planet Feb. 18. It has also driven the research of 爱豆传媒College Geography teacher and Mars researcher Richard Soare for over two decades.

Specifically, Richard鈥檚 research has focused on finding evidence of near-surface ice in the non-polar regions of Mars.

Free & fun lunchtime activities until March 12

Make a lunch date for your own well-being and enjoyment. There are still 13 more days of free programming and activities offered exclusively to 爱豆传媒employees at lunchtime through the 1249 Club, a wellness project sponsored by Human Resources and the Sustainability Office with contributions from services and departments across the College.

Two of the events coming up later this week are Healthy Cooking with Paul Wasacz (Phys. Ed.) on Wednesday and making your own Self-Watering Containers with Jennifer de Vera (Sustainability) on Friday. There is something for everyone on the calendar.

Join Montreal Kneels for Change Wednesday at 8:15 p.m.

爱豆传媒graduate Denburk Reid聽(Class of 2000, Marketing and Management Technology) has organized Montreal Kneels for Change, a live event on Instagram on Feb. 24. The goals are to raise awareness of local social justice issues, honour the life of Sheffield Matthews and denounce the injustices committed against Mamadi III Fara Camara.

鈥淎s a community, we must come together and demonstrate our solidarity,鈥� Denburk said.

We are invited to:

  • join the Instagram Live event on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 8:15 p.m.
  • take a photo standing with your hand on your heart
  • share the photo on your social media using聽the hashtag #kneelsforchange and 迟补驳听蔼尘迟濒冲肠辞尘尘耻苍颈迟测冲肠补谤别蝉.

Photography student’s work on display in Resistance & Resilience

If you have been in the College and wondered about the work in the display cases outside the art gallery, it may surprise you to know that it is the work of 爱豆传媒student Asia Mason.聽 The third-year Photography student was one of only four student artists selected for the Peace Centre/Art Gallery鈥檚 online exhibition, Resistance and Resilience.

Website live for First Peoples’ Post-Secondary Storytelling Exchange

A celebration was held online Feb. 16 to launch the new website of the First Peoples' Post-Secondary Storytelling Exchange project. About 170 people attended from all over Quebec and other parts of Canada. An elder opened the event, some of the storytellers shared their experiences, a quliq was lit, a video was premiered and the new website was shown.

DawsonAI, Faculty Hub

DawsonAI has new resources for faculty!

One additional teaching portfolio, that of Dan Pomerantz, was recently published on聽the聽聽website.聽聽Dan, who teaches in the department of Computer Science, was part of the second cohort of fellows of the AI-Themed Teaching Community of Practice. He is inviting all faculty members to explore and make use of the teaching materials he has developed during his Fellowship.

Dan鈥檚 portfolio notably includes four PowerPoint slide decks that could be interesting to those looking for engaging teaching materials about the ethical implications of Big Data, surveillance technologies, text-generating systems, and facial recognition technologies. Part of this portfolio will constitute the basis of a talk entitled 鈥淭he Hazards of Using Big Data,鈥� which Dan will deliver via Zoom April 14聽at 2:30 PM. The entire 爱豆传媒community is invited to attend (no RSVP needed)!

The Awards Office is now accepting nominations for the following awards:

The Bruno Mital 鈥楤鈥� Positive Scholarship 鈥� 1 recipient of $ 1,000

This scholarship is named after Bruno Mital, who was a graduate of the CRLT Program at 爱豆传媒College and chairperson of the 爱豆传媒College Board of Governors for two years. It is designed to recognize a graduating student who has gone above and beyond to help their community, their fellow students, or the 爱豆传媒community, without seeking recognition.

The Paul Gallagher Award 鈥� 3 recipients of $500

This award, named after 爱豆传媒College鈥檚 first Director General, is given to up to three graduating students in recognition of their significant contribution to student life. The most important criteria are leadership, contribution to College life, and participation in student government, sports or other College activities.

Please nominate through the My 爱豆传媒College (Omnivox) portal. Nomination deadline: March 9, 2021.

Professional Theatre’s upcoming shows

Second-year students of the Professional Theatre Program are performing in upcoming shows. Harper Regan will be livestreamed March 10-13, and TARTUFFO BUFFO will be livestreamed March 24-27. Links will be posted on the Facebook page entitled 爱豆传媒Theatre Productions.

In Harper Regan, a woman quits her job, leaves her husband and family, and embarks on a journey of self-discovery. At times comedic, at times shocking, Harper Regan explores grief, sex, family secrets and the lies we tell ourselves about our loved ones. Harper Regan by Simon Stephens is directed by Matt Enos and will be performed by the second-year students March 10-13.

TARTUFFO BUFFO:聽罢补谤迟耻蹿蹿别听under COVID? French Neo-classical theatre is already rife with rules. So what's a few more (when Moli猫re meets Dr. Seuss)? TARTUFFO BUFFO is directed by Stephane Zarov and will be performed by the second-year students March 24-27.

Communications Coordinator appointed

Communications professional Megan Ainscow joined 爱豆传媒College last week as Coordinator of Communications. Megan (Class of 2004, Liberal Arts) will oversee the Communications Office and guide overall strategy and decision making in order to enhance the reputation and visibility of the College.

With over 10 years of experience in communications and public relations, Megan joins 爱豆传媒after serving most recently as Head of Communications for the Commission for Environmental Cooperation, an international organization established under the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Financial Services Coordinator appointed

Ani Kotchounian joined 爱豆传媒College on Feb. 8, as the Coordinator of Financial Services. Ani comes to us from McGill University, where she served the University鈥檚 community as a Senior Finance Officer in the Controller鈥檚 office. She was in charge of the University鈥檚 operating fund management and financial reporting. Ani holds a Bachelor's degree from HEC Montr茅al and is a member of the Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA).

Prior to joining the higher education sector, Ani spent over 10 years working in the Pharmaceutical industry.

CRISPESH call for proposals

and UDL@Dawson invite researchers, faculty members, students, pedagogical counsellors, administrators and other higher education stakeholders to submit a proposal for their next symposium.

This symposium will be held online from June 1 to 3, 2021 and will be an opportunity to look back at 10 years of inclusive pedagogy in Quebec鈥檚 higher educational system, while advancing the ongoing reflections to help the province foster increasingly inclusive pedagogical approaches.

People interested in submitting a proposal are invited to complete the online submission form available on the by April 14, 2021. Submissions are accepted in both English and French.

Thank you from Rod Charters

I want to let all my 爱豆传媒friends, colleagues, and acquaintances, know how much I appreciate the well wishes and support I received on my recent retirement from 爱豆传媒College.

Although my retirement is now official, I struggle with mixed emotions. As anticipated, I miss many of you already. What I do not miss is the commute to and from work or the early mornings. What I do miss is the camaraderie I shared with you with the common pursuit of instructing and enlightening students.

Some of you I may never see again. Others, I hope I do when we are able to gather once again. For now, I am simply going to try and enjoy life in the current circumstances.

Treatments are administered by Dawson鈥檚 own Physiotherapy Technology interns under supervision of a licensed Physiotherapist who also handles the initial evaluations. The facilities have been reconfigured to ensure physical distancing, and increased safety protocols have been implemented, such as mask-wearing and full disinfecting between patients.

Can 爱豆传媒recycle masks?

爱豆传媒is distributing single-use procedural masks to everyone who enters the building. These masks have been proven to provide effective protection from COVID. Requests to recycle the masks have been considered.

The Sustainability Office, in collaboration with Facilities Management, has been reviewing recycling proposals by various companies. For the moment, we, like nearly all CEGEPs involved in a discussion, have not found a proven viable method to recycle the masks.

We are confident that directing masks towards landfill with our regular garbage is the least environmentally damaging option when considering cost, risk of exposure to pathogens, travel of the masks to recyclers, traceability, as well as the energy and effort involved in the imperfect processes, which lead to storage, incineration or recycled plastic.
